Burner Baked Sweet Potatoes

Burner Baked Sweet Potatoes

Our winter time favourite! Straight out of the fire onto the table. The sweet caramel smell gets even the laziest rats out of their rooms.

The bottom of the image shows a carrot. They work too, taste great but not as flavoursome as sweet potatoes.

Instructions

  1. This recipe really only works if you have access to a wood burner, wood heater or slow combustion heater. Yes, an open camp fire would do the job too.
    • Wrap the sweet potato in aluminium foil. Don't peel it.
    • Using the thong, set upright on the edge of the fire. We are looking here at about 300-320C.
    • Probe with the thong if the sweet potato has become soft. If not yet soft, let it swelter for another few minutes.
    • Take it out onto a plate with some protect under the plate before you place it on the table. It is very hot and will burn your table through the plate.

Note

Gloves and a fireproof thong is a must.

I love eating food with a well balanced and rich taste. And even more, I love to make it from scratch and treat it like a piece of art, culinary and visually.

While you may have scoured zillions of recipe site and tried a handful of these beautifully presented creations, you may have noticed that some of them didn't work out that well or didn't look as they were 'supposed' to look.

In many cases this is because the ingredients used are very localised. The wheat used in one region, country or climate zone is quite different from one at another place. So are the spices, meats and vegetables. So, give yourself a little slack and don't take the ingredient measures here as absolute. Look at what you'd like to achieve and adjust to your taste and locale.
